Introducing… Australia 's Healthy Weight Week
24th – 31st January 2010
The number of overweight Australians is increasing with 7.4 million Australians now overweight. That is, two thirds of adults and one quarter of our children are now overweight or obese.
Here are the facts: Individuals who are obese have a 50-100% increased risk of premature death compared to people with a BMI in the healthy range.
People aged 25-35 years who are severely obese are 12 times more likely to die than those who are lean.
Obesity is on the rise: estimates based on historical rate increases predict there may be 7.2 million obese Australians by 2025.
Being overweight and obese can predispose you to many diseases, namely diabetes, cardiovascular disease (including heart attack and stroke), the metabolic syndrome, and some cancers.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the largest contributor to the burden of disease in
Type 2 Diabetes caused 3% of deaths in 2005 and contributed to a further 6% of deaths. People with diabetes were 2 times more likely to have a heart attack and 3 times more likely to have a stroke. 60% of cases are preventable.
In 2005, 42.5% of deaths in men aged 45-64 were due to cancer.
